Can anyone wear contact lenses?

Almost everyone can wear contact lenses, from young children to the elderly. Even with the most ‘difficult’ eyes, there are usually a number of options. Proper maintenance is essential to continue wearing contact lenses comfortably. Have you tried lenses in the past without success? Not to worry, because technology has improved greatly in recent years and now your eyes might qualify for contact lenses. Feel free to make an appointment for a no-obligation consultation. Our optometrists are happy to think with you about solutions; for nearly every eye we are able to find a suitable solution.

Will contact lenses allow me to see better?

Yes, especially at higher prescriptions. This is because glasses always sit at a small distance from the eye, which can distort the image. Contact lenses sit directly on the eye, making vision almost as sharp as for people with naturally good eyes.
Moreover, lenses move with every eye movement, whereas with glasses you sometimes look at the edges of the frame. As a result, you need to move your head less to see properly. Many people who switch from glasses to lenses notice an immediate difference in sharpness and comfort.

What is an optometrist?

An optometrist is an eye care professional with a bachelor's degree and with a broader expertise than an optician or contact lens specialist. He or she examines the health of your eyes and can detect eye problems early on.
In case of complaints, reduced vision or an increased risk of eye diseases, it is recommended to make an appointment with an optometrist. He or she can advise you on the right solution or refer you to an ophthalmologist if necessary. You can visit without a referral letter and our optometrists work closely with ophthalmologists.

Do you teach me how to handle contact lenses?

Yes, after the trial fitting, we schedule a comprehensive instructional appointment. During this session, you will learn step by step how to insert, remove and care for your lenses. The instruction takes about an hour, so you can start using your lenses with confidence.
You will receive the lenses in a handy starter set with lens case, liquid and clear instructions to review at home. If you have any questions, you can always give us a call. We will also make a check-up appointment right away to see how you are doing and answer any questions you may have. This way, we guide you well during the adjustment period.

Can I go swimming with contact lenses?

No, swimming with contact lenses is not recommended. Both pool and surface water contain organisms that can cause eye infections. Rigid contact lenses can trap these bacteria and also get lost in the water quickly. Soft lenses act like a sponge and absorb everything in the water, including bacteria.

Do you still want to swim with lenses? Then use daily disposable lenses and throw them away immediately after swimming. In addition, wear well-sealed swimming goggles to minimise the risk of infection. Alternatively, opt for glasses or enter the water without lenses.

What does contact lens maintenance cost?

Maintenance costs depend on the type of contact lens. Soft daily lenses require hardly any maintenance, while monthly and rigid contact lenses require specific fluids. What fluids exactly you will be needing, will be discussed with your optometrist. For advice on maintenance, you can always contact one of our specialists.
